Bernard Schottlander, originally from Germany, came to live and work in England in 1939 at the age of 15.
He spent the war years as a welder in a factory and studied sculpture at the Leeds College of Art. The combination of welding skills and sculptural ability influenced his creative output.
In 1951 Schottlander created the Mantis series of lights. These lights encapsulate a feeling of movement, as if caught at a moment in time, poised and taught. The structures include clever counterbalancing components that break up the expected symmetry.
The Mantis range of lights has been re-created and re-issued by the French company DCW under the Bernard Schottlander brand name. DCW are also responsible for the highly acclaimed re-issues of the Lampe Gras series.
